Photographs of W.S.U. and Pullman, WA 1927-1973

In 1983, this collection of some 1,600 prints was selected from the entire Hutchinson Studio donation of 122 boxes of negatives. The collection is arranged according to subject with dates provided when known. The photographs record the changes on the campus of WSU and in rural communities of the Palouse region of southeastern Washington and northern Idaho between the 1920s and the 1970s. Agricultural photographs trace the shift from the use of horses in harvesting to modern combines. Neighboring geographic areas are also represented. These include the Columbia River gorge, the heavily forested areas of northeastern Idaho and the semi-arid deserts of central Washington. In addition to the campus of WSU and wheat farming, there are scenes of pea processing, logging, shipping, and construction.
